Lockett grew up in a creative family and was heavily influenced by his grandfather's storytelling and mother's craft-making skills. His early life experiences, including the civil rights movement, had a significant impact on his art, which often explores themes of identity and social justice. From a young age, Lockett was drawn to recycled materials and found objects, which he would later incorporate into his art.
Lockett's artistic journey began in the 1980s, when he started creating -expressionist paintings and assemblages using discarded materials like tin, wood, and fabric. His work was heavily influenced by African American and Southern cultures, as well as Christian and Native American traditions. This unique blend of styles and influences has made Lockett's art truly one-of-a-kind.
