Imagine you’ve painted your car a gorgeous cherry red. Then you drive it through a sandstorm. That paint isn’t going to magically become part of the metal underneath, right? It’s the same with DHA, the stuff that makes you brown. It just sits on the top layer of dead skin cells.
When those UV rays hit you, they’re cooking the dead skin, and the skin underneath that isn’t bronzed. If you do get some color, it’s from your own melanin, and it will be a completely different shade than your spray tan. You’ll end up with a lovely patchwork of “fake bake” and “sun-kissed freak.”
Real talk: the worst part is the smell. Nothing says “I tried to hack the system” like the aroma of burnt biscuits mixed with sunscreen. Your skin basically becomes a science experiment, and you’re the disappointed lab assistant.
