How Fast Does the Tube Go

You want bragging rights? The Victoria Line is your champ. It’s fully automated, with slick signals and wide tunnels. It zips along at an average of 33 mph.

That makes it the fastest deep-level tube line by a country mile. It feels like a spaceship compared to the Central Line, which is a bumpy, slow-motion nightmare in comparison.

At the other end of the spectrum? The Circle Line. It’s basically a touring bus on rails. Its average speed hovers around 19 mph. I’ve seen snails with more urgency.

What About Other Systems?

Let’s be fair. London isn’t trying to be a bullet train. The New York Subway averages about 17 mph. Paris’s Metro is around 22 mph. We’re not the worst! But we’re not the best either. It’s like being the tallest kid in the junior class.

The real speedsters are the mainline trains. The Elizabeth Line hits 90 mph on some stretches. That’s a proper train. The Tube is just… a very fast, underground caterpillar.
