Does the Tube Run on Christmas Day
Does the Tube Run on Christmas Dayの概要と注目ポイントをわかりやすく整理しました。
Believe it or not, the Underground used to run a full service on Christmas Day back in the 19th century. But then, someone must have said, “Hang on, why are we making people commute to work on the day we’re supposed to be jolly?” By the 1960s, services were gutted. Wild fact: In 1979, only 1,000 people used the Tube on Christmas Day. That’s fewer than the number of people queueing for a new iPhone on Black Friday. TfL realized that maybe, just maybe, running a dozen trains for a dozen people was a waste of coal—or electricity, these days.
These days, it’s a compromise. A skeleton crew of drivers, station staff, and engineers volunteer to work (hello, double pay!)—and they deserve a gold star. Actually, they get time-and-a-half, but still. Cheers to them.

But what if I need to travel across London on foot?
If you’re not served by one of the lucky lines, you’ve got two options: walk or take a bus. Yes, buses also run on Christmas Day—but they’re even more unreliable than your Uncle Bob’s karaoke rendition of “Last Christmas.” Buses only go until about 8 PM, and some routes vanish entirely. Surprising fact: The Night Tube (you know, the one that runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays) is off for Christmas Day, like a teenager hiding in their room. So if you’re out past midnight, you’re either sleeping on someone’s sofa or becoming a very cold Uber passenger.
