Is Tower Bridge in the Congestion Charge

If you’re just popping over the bridge for a photo, don’t park anywhere. Seriously. The parking spots on the bridge are for tour buses only, and the council will ticket you faster than you can say “Is that the Shard?”

My advice? Park south of the river—try the streets around Bermondsey Street, which are quiet and free on weekends. Then walk across the bridge. You’ll save the fee, you won’t get a fine, and you’ll actually enjoy the view without worrying about a penalty letter.

Or, do what I do now: take the Tube to Tower Hill and walk. The walk from the station to the crossing is about three minutes, and you can pretend you’re in a Victorian novel. Plus, no cameras.

But what if you already got a fine?

Here’s the ironic part: you can appeal if you were on the bridge itself. If your GPS or dashcam shows you were on the deck (between the toll booths, which are now tourist attractions), you can argue the zone doesn’t apply. I won my appeal by sending a screenshot of my dashcam footage showing the bridge’s suspension cables—not the approach road.

The key is the wording: the Congestion Charge zone does not include “the carriageway of Tower Bridge.” That phrase is buried in the Transport for London regulations somewhere. Print it out, highlight it, and wave it like a flag.

But if you were on the approach road? Pay up. It’s cheaper to pay the £15 charge early than to fight a £160 penalty. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.
