Let’s not forget the “Mindhunter” TV series, which is basically a masterclass in how awkward it is to interview killers. In real life, FBI agents Ed Kemper (a 6’9” giant with a genius IQ) would chat about his mom and then casually mention his hobby of killing. The show makes it look cool; in reality, it was probably just super weird small talk.
Spoiler: Kemper once told the FBI he killed his mother because she wouldn’t let him go on vacation. That’s the most passive-aggressive excuse for murder I’ve ever heard. “Mom, you ruined my summer! Bye, Felicia, but, you know, with a hatchet.”
The “Hannibal Lecter” Problem
Of course, the most famous fake killer is Hannibal Lecter from “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991). But here’s the kicker: the movie is based on a real Texan murderer named Dr. Ed Gein. Gein didn’t eat people, but he did make lampshades out of human skin. He also inspired Norman Bates and Leatherface. That’s one prolific guy for a guy who never actually killed a dozen people.
Gein was a momma’s boy who dug up graves because he “liked the way people smelled.” I’m not making that up. He was basically a creepy, homicidal Flea Market enthusiast with a macabre arts-and-crafts hobby.
