This debate got so out of hand that the United States Supreme Court had to weigh in. I am not joking. In the 1893 case Nix v. Hedden, they argued about tomatoes. But the ruling set a precedent.
Is the green bean a fruit or a vegetable? | Mashable
The court decided that for tax purposes, things like tomatoes (and by extension, beans) are “vegetables.” Why? Because people use them like vegetables. The court literally said, “Screw the botany, look at the dinner plate.”
So, legally, in the US, beans are vegetables. The government says so. Which means if you try to claim them as fruit on your taxes, you’ll get a very confusing audit. You’ve been warned.
Let’s Get Personal: What Do You Actually Call Them?
Here’s the thing I love about this debate: it’s completely ridiculous. Next time you eat chili, look at those kidney beans. Are you eating a fruit stew? That sounds like a nightmare.
What about green beans on a Thanksgiving plate? Are we serving a fruit casserole? “Pass the fruit casserole, Aunt Carol.” It just doesn’t have the same ring, does it? The word “vegetable” feels right because we’ve built an entire culture around it.
Language is powerful. We call them vegetables because that’s how they live in our world. The truth is in the taste, not the seed count.
